Chris' Pause For Thought: Kate Bottley

Chris' Pause For Thought: Kate Bottley

From Revered Kate Bottley, Vicar of the churches of Blyth, Scrooby and Ranskill:

Growing up I wasn’t very sporty, in junior school I was always last, whether it was the egg and spoon or the sack race. And high school wasn’t much better. I spent much more time walking the cross country route than I ever did running it. I was short, round and slow. I still am.

It wasn’t until university that I finally found the sport for me and it came as a bit of a surprise. Yes Chris, before I was a vicar I was a hooker! Embraced by a fantastic group of women I was to be found every Saturday and Wednesday my head strapped with electrical tape and a gum shield round my chops, happy as Larry in the middle of a rolling maul. We’re still friends 22 years later and the weekend before last we had a bit of a reunion. We watched the England/Wales game, of course (the less said the better, only one of our number is Welsh) and we had a brilliant couple of days. We seemed to just pick up just where we left off last time. But we are a varied bunch. There’s Kate Fitz, 6 foot tall and can run like the wind, Robbo our second row, tall and strong and Abela built like a brick privy, short and stocky and the best prop I’ve ever had the pleasure of scrumming down with. Rugby is a wonderful sport because it has a place for everyone. Fast ones in the backs and strength up front. Perhaps that’s why I finally found a sport I loved to play and was actually not bad at playing. And of course belonging to a team gave me far more than just a dirty face and a sweaty brow. It gave me a place to belong and it gave me life-long friends.

Feeling like the weak one or the odd one out is no fun at all. I think we have a responsibility to help others to find their feet in the world, to be inclusive and to stick with someone until they find a place to fit and then to celebrate with them. And of course to find our own place to belong.

The Christian poet John Donne famously wrote ‘No man is an island, Entire of itself, Every man is a piece of the continent, A part of the main.’  So whether it’s with your colleagues at work, the women in the WI or at your place of worship, I hope you find your place to belong. I found mine and it was with those wonderful ladies in the middle of that line out.
