Chris' Pause For Thought: Sharon Grenham-Thompson
From Reverend Sharon Grenham-Thompson, Anglican Priest and Prison Chaplain:
I don't know if I mentioned it at all to you Chris but I got married earlier this year. As Richard and I are both of, shall we say, mature years, we decided that we didn't want 'things' as wedding presents, and instead we asked for 'experiences'.Β
And this past weekend we just cashed in one of those experiences and we went to Barcelona for a few days.
Barcelona is a wonderful, vibrant city, but what really blew me away was the architecture - especially the buildings designed by the visionary architect Antoni Gaudi. Gaudiβs style is a mix of amazing and bonkers, and he was certainly controversial in his lifetime.
But Gaudi was also a devout Catholic, and he called God his client. For me his most incredible building is the huge church of the Sagrada Familia, or Holy Family β and when I saw it, it took my breath away. With a soaring interior that feels like a heavenly forest, and details inspired by the natural world, this building is an experience in itself. Gaudi dedicated 40 years of his life to creating this church, but he knew it wouldn't be finished in his lifetime. In fact it still isnβt, but I think thatβs part of its appeal - a glorious work of human collaboration and creation thatβs continued for generations, and it is already a magnificent statement of spirituality and passion.
Gaudi once said 'tomorrow let's make something beautiful' - I'm all for that, but how about bringing it forward - let's make something beautiful today.
Now of course we donβt all share the same beliefs or views of life. But we can all have passion, and we can all create something, whether itβs a moment of pleasure for others, or a meal, or a family. Maybe even a radio show! Sometimes we donβt see the benefit of what weβre doing day by day, but donβt give up hope! I believe that if we allow passion into our lives, vision, collaboration, then we donβt just create a βthingβ we create an experience -Β taste, laughter, education, love - experiences that touch and change lives, and those are the thing that will long outlive us.
