UK researchers have signed a deal to build one of the first instruments for what will become the World’s largest visible and infrared telescope, the European Extremely Large Telescope (E-ELT). The spectrograph, called Harmoni, will provide the telescope with a sensitivity hundreds of times better than any current telescope of its kind. Prof Niranjan Thatte is the Principal Investigator.

In a letter to the FT on Monday, Bt's main rivals, and some business leaders, claimed that millions of customers have a substandard service and the time has come for the Competition and Markets Authority to investigate: the clear implication that BT should lose control of BT Openreach who run the network and are responsible for rolling out broadband. BT is retaliating with a promise of universal broadband coverage but only guaranteed at very low speeds.

The first part of a new Scots Thesaurus being compiled by researchers at the University of Glasgow is published online today. The project is to classify every word in the Scots language; it is unexpectedly rich when it comes to words for describing something in particular. There are going to be big changes in the way in which charities can raise money. A government commissioned report is recommending this morning that the system be shaken up and that charities should lose the right to regulate themselves. Christopher Rae told Today that his 87 year-old father, Samuel, who has dementia, was preyed upon by scam companies who got his personal data from the charities he supported.

The car industry is beginning to feel the fallout from Volkswagen’s admission that up to 11 million of its diesel vehicles sold worldwide are equipped with technology that allows them to rig emissions tests. Volkswagen shares have dropped by over a third in just two days. The Stoxx Europe 600 autos index fell by 7.6 per cent, the biggest one-day fall for four years. Shares in General Motors, Ford and Fiat Chrysler also fell. Volkswagen has announced that it will be setting aside $6.5bn to deal with the crisis, and it’s been estimated that fines on the company as could total $18bn. The U.S. Justice Department is conducting a criminal investigation after the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) said on Friday that VW diesel cars had much higher emissions than tests had suggested and that software in several diesel cars could deceive regulators. EU leaders are meeting in Brussels to discuss the plan agreed by EU interior ministers to relocate 120,000 migrants across the continent over the next two years. It will see migrants moved from Italy, Greece and Hungary to other EU countries. Romania, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary voted against accepting mandatory quotas. Finland abstained from the vote. Poland, which had opposed the proposal, voted for it.

The secret was a very peculiar characteristic of our unique Sapiens language: the ability to talk about and believe in myth, things which do not tangibly exist. Without believing in some myth or another – be it God, money, the nation, or human rights, a large numbers of people cannot cooperate effectively. This was one of the arguments made by Yuval Harari in his best-selling book Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind and will be the focus of a discussion he is leading this evening for Intelligence Squared in London. But with faith in intangible political institutions such as the EU and nation states arguably under increasing threat, are we beginning to question and move on from some of these myths?
