Chris' Pause For Thought: Brian D'Arcy

Chris' Pause For Thought: Brian D'Arcy

From Father Brian D’Arcy, a Catholic Passionist priest:

Earlier this morning I was in our oratory saying a mouthful of prayers to start the day. These days I say less prayers but listen and look more. β€œBe still and know that I am God.” is my motto. So I flopped into a chair and looked out the window. It’s a round window, like the rising sun really, with a hint of wheat and grapes intertwined in its stained glass decoration, reminding me that from the earth comes bread and wine, food and drink.Β  All priceless reminders of God’s presence.

Down in the valley is a delightful tree, well earthed and strong. It stands alone in the field. This morning the young calves were sheltering under its branches as happy as could be; flicking their tails playfully; big, soft, eyes looking up imploringly as they feigned head butts into one another’s bellies - actually it was more a friendly nudge in the ribs.

Leaves, each one different, make it rounded, full, symmetrical, but imperfect enough to be naturally beautiful. A few months ago it was naked and skeletal. Six weeks from now its leaves will be a tired yellow and then a sleepy brown before becoming a bony skeleton in October. And the miracle is that it will be magnificent and beautiful in every season.

I took away a simple enough reflection with me as I backed out the door of the oratory, afraid to waste a second of this powerful example of God’s presence.Β  It was this. Life comes and life goes, yours, mine and nature’s. Each of us is a work of art, a canvas coloured uniquely by God, as He writes straight on the crooked lines of my life imperfect enough to be beautiful and loved exactly as I am.

At the door I glanced at the open bible on the lectern. John’s Gospel said, β€œIn the world you will have troubles, but be brave: I have conquered the world” (John 16:33). That’s all the encouragement I need to start this day with confidence.Β
