Script

Good morning. They say if you want something done properly, do it yourself. I’ve just returned from a family holiday. And what often happens when we go away is that my mum ends up doing far more cooking and cleaning than anyone else.
Ìý
So I thought, well this isn’t really on, the least I can do is stack the dishwasher. And one night I did just that. And my mum came into the kitchen, saw what I’d done, appreciated the effort and proceeded to completely re-stack the dishwasher the way she would have done it. Undeterred, I did try another two or three times during the holiday before I eventually gave up. Mum knew how the dishwasher should be stacked and while she appreciated the offer, she really would rather do it herself.
Ìý
What can I say? I tried.
Ìý
Apparently, though, Jesus wasn’t a subscriber to the ‘If you want something done well do it yourself’ philosophy. When faced with a massive hungry crowd on the occasion that we now know as the feeding of the five thousand, he didn’t turn to his disciples and say, ‘Finally, lads - a chance to show you that magic trick I’ve been working on!’
Ìý
Instead he asked for their help. And they found a boy who was willing to share his packed lunch. And Jesus worked with what they had. And somehow, he made it enough.
Ìý
God doesn’t need us to help him achieve anything. But the God we meet in Jesus is the kind of God that wants us to get involved in his plans, to play our part in building his kingdom here on earth.

Dear Lord, thank you for being interested in what we have to offer today. Please take our meagre gifts and by your grace make them enough. Amen.
