A spiritual comment and prayer to begin the day with Anna Drew.

Good morning. We live in a society where we are able to do more - and do it faster and more efficiently β than weβve ever been able to before. I can check my work emails on my phone as I travel into London on the coach, I can watch TV while Iβm cooking dinner, I can shop online in the five minutes before I need to pick my son up from nursery. Just when you think you canβt pack any more into a day, someone invents a new piece of technology to make it possible.
I love the freedom and opportunities that technology gives us. We can do amazing things - all the time. But because we can, we often feel that we should, putting more and more pressure on ourselves and others to achieve, to make the most of every minute we have, and expecting ourselves to be held to that same standard at every turn.
But God is not a personal trainer blowing his whistle and bellowing for us to do one more lap, one more push-up, another length of the pool. The Bible actually calls Jesus our brother and God our father. They are members of our family who know our needs and desperately want the best for us. Jesus says:
βCome to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.β
For many people, the first of September marks the beginning of a new academic year, an opportunity to set targets and make fresh plans and commitments. But I wonder what would happen if we began this new period with reflection and restoration, rather than simply ever-more frantic activity?
Lord of time and space, break into our busyness with your peace. Bring calm in our restlessness and refresh us with your presence. Amen.
