Chris' Pause For Thought: Paul Kerensa

Chris' Pause For Thought: Paul Kerensa

From comedian & writer, Paul Kerensa:

Happy New Year everybody! The academic year鈥檚 just begun in England at least, after a summer of fun. Me, I鈥檝e performed at festivals like Edinburgh and that mighty behemoth: Guildford Fringe Festival. From music to faith festivals, with thousands of people in tents, it鈥檚 been... intense. (That joke wasn鈥檛 in my Edinburgh show.)

Or we鈥檝e stayed at home and enjoyed summer blockbusters, Proms, or the company of our children for those oh-so-brief eight tranquil weeks... (my 4 year old is very keen for school, and so are we).

Maybe we鈥檝e been inspired by a cause this summer 鈥 festival speakers urged me to go greener, and many of us have been moved by news footage of what鈥檚 said to be the worst refugee crisis since the Second World War.

But so often these emotions are summer romances, fading as quickly as they鈥檝e ignited. Enlivened with summer spirit, it鈥檚 easy to roar with a festival crowd. But we drive home, holiday memories in our rearview mirror. We want to race around the track, do it all again 鈥 but we鈥檙e not all Mark Webber. Instead it鈥檚 school, slogging through work, and 鈥楽eptember鈥.

This was felt by one of the first disciples, who clamoured for the carnival atmosphere of Palm Sunday in Jesus鈥 final week. He was another Simon 鈥 a good man 鈥 鈥榣e bon鈥 indeed. 鈥淚鈥檒l never leave you!鈥 he exclaimed. But five days later, away from the crowd, he denied him three times, as Jesus was led away, a Larry Lamb to the slaughter. (Now that鈥檚 a crowbar.)

We sing loudly together in the August sun, but individually we run, like watercolours in the September rain. So whatever鈥檚 stirred our hearts this summer 鈥 a passion, a cause or a faith 鈥 I hope it鈥檚 not a brief holiday romance. Soak up our summer inspirations like a sponge, and we can 鈥榮queeze鈥 the life out of them over the coming year, carrying that enthusiasm as we 鈥渨ork all through the winter, the weather brass and bitter鈥.

So maybe let's not just ask the children what they did in the holidays, but ask ourselves. If I can stay as enthusiastic about my work as my boy is about starting school, then wow. That first day ice cream I was going to buy after his first day 鈥 might get one for him too.
