Reverend Kate Bottley, Vicar of the churches of Blyth, Scrooby and Ranskill:

Myself and a couple of vicar friends, decided a girls night out was long overdue. We put our glad rags on and headed into town, to a very hip cocktail bar and it was there that our night got off to a brilliant start, ‘Do you ladies have any id please?’ Said the charming barman, ‘Sorry?’ ‘ID to prove your age?’ I was so thrilled I went round to his side of the bar and hugged him. Here we were 3 middle aged vicars being asked to verify that we were old enough to buy a drink, when in reality we were all old enough to be his mother, probably grandmother. We skipped out of the bar and onto the club ready to dance the night away with a spring in our step. Our egos were a little crushed a few minutes later when we realised that we were easily the oldest on the dance floor and it was way past our bedtime, we were home in time for a hot chocolate and a digestive.

My trip to the dance floor wasn’t the only party last week, we had a couple of family ‘dos’ too, my daughter Ruby turned 14, like most 14 year olds she would love to be mistaken for being older and we also had my Nan’s funeral who just before she died told me off for getting her age wrong ‘You’re a 101 aren’t you Gran?’ ‘Cheeky! I’m only a 100!’

The bible talks about our life being ‘3 score year and 10’ or 70 years, of course some of us will do a little better than that while others of us might not get that far. During my teenage years my Dad often told me ‘These are best years of your life!’ I’m not sure about that, and whether we would like to be a mistaken for a little younger or indeed a little older we are the age we are and despite lotions, potions and our best efforts there’s no way to add to or take away from the date on our birth certificate.

So what then? The bible also says ‘I can think of nothing better than for a person to do good while they live.’  That sounds like a great idea, we are the age we are and perhaps it doesn’t matter, maybe it is just a number, and young, old or roughly in the middle, what if the best years of our lives are the ones we are living right now?
