The book is about regret and forgiveness which centres around Amaterasu Takahashi, who lives in a retirement home. A man arrives at her door claiming he is her grandson - but she doesn't believe him. She knows her grandson and her daughter died the day the Americans dropped the atomic bomb on Nagasaki...or did they?

Jackie Copleton lived in Nagasaki and Sapporo where she taught English before returning to England and becoming a journalist. A Dictionary Of Mutual Understanding is her first novel.
