Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

We have a toy corner at the back of church, a train set, dolls house and a giant bucket of assorted vehicles. Whenever we have more than our usual share of visitors at a service, mostly weddings and christenings, I advertise the delights of the toy corner and encourage those with restless children to feel free to use it or to bring a toy back to their pew to play with. I’ve noticed though that there’s usually one or two grown ups whose eyes light up when I say this and I suspect it’s not just because toys are sometimes more exciting than sermons, I think some of those grown ups are just looking for an excuse to play with a train set.

I’ll confess to being a big kid too. I like jumping in puddles, seeing who can blow the biggest bubble gum bubble and I pulled my back out on holiday this summer showing off doing dive bombs into the pool. I had a brilliant day last week at a retro video game arcade playing on Space invaders and Pac man until my own children lost interest and had to drag me away.

I was very excited about today and didn’t really get much sleep last night, too giddy. Looking around at our happy bunch I suspect I’m not the only big kid here, of course the ‘toys’ you are playing with this morning are bigger and more expensive than the dinky cars in the church toy box, but I think the principle is roughly the same.

Sadly some children have to grow up far too quickly or don’t have much of a childhood to speak of, a big part of Children in Need is helping children to be children again, to play, from funding projects supporting time off for young carers, to community breakfast clubs and play schemes in some of the most challenging places to be a child in the UK.

Jesus said ‘Let the little children come to me, don’t stop them, for heaven belongs to them. Indeed anyone who does not receive the kingdom like a little child will never enter it ‘

Being more childlike is not an excuse for immaturity, or to shirk our responsibilities or to be naïve, but an encouragement to remember to play and to have fun, to recall ourselves at a more innocent time in our lives.

So drive carefully and thank you for your amazing and generous donations, be sure to have loads and loads of fun today, you lovely lot, knowing that you are part of raising an amazing amount of money for some amazing children, and remember growing old is inevitable but growing up is always optional
