Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

I know a story is a good one, when, like a parable, it keeps on inspiring me with every re-telling.

Years ago I discovered an extract from Jaroldeen Edwards’ book β€œCelebration!” which explained, what she called, the Daffodil Principle. The journey begins high up in the San Bernardino Mountains in Southern California with a five acre site called the Daffodil Garden. This garden was painstakingly planted over many years by Gene Bauer and her husband Dale. In full bloom β€œthe garden looks as if a giant vat of gold has been poured across the slopes” of the mountain peak.

Nearby Bauer lived in a simple A-shaped cottage. On the porch she had printed the following notice-:

β€œAnswers to the Questions I Know You are asking. 50,000 Bulbs;

Β One at a time;

by One woman;

Two hands, Two feet, And very little Brain.”

One woman, working for years on end, transformed a mountain-top. She made 50,000 little decisions and created a masterpiece. Little things make great things happen.

Incidentally, in 1999, a major mountain fire destroyed Bauer’s house. It blackened and scorched the beautiful daffodil garden too. But the following spring they grew and blossomed as magnificently as ever and continue to do so to this day.

I firmly believe in the absolute importance of the good, consistent little choices we make every day, often without even being aware of them. That’s what gives us character – the small, unseen unspectacular choices to do the right thing, especially when nobody knows about them. Jesus taught his followers: β€œWhoever can be trusted in little things can also be trusted in great things…” (Luke 16:10).

Honesty, integrity, loyalty, courage, as well as kindness, patience, goodness and compassion are the bulbs I can go on planting one at a time, transforming the barren landscapes of my life. In the end, character is what counts because your character is what you really are, while your reputation is merely what others think you are.ΜύΜύ
