Joely Richardson
Joely Richardson is part of the Redgrave acting dynasty - the daughter of Vanessa Redgrave and the director Tony Richardson. Like her mother she chose acting as her career, and has starred in cult films such as Drowning By Numbers, had a stint with the Royal Shakespeare Company, and a long-term role in the plastic surgery drama Nip/Tuck. Now she stars in Maggie - a zombie movie with a difference. Jane talks to her about Maggie and about her next project - playing Queen Margaret on stage in The Wars of the Roses.
Maggie is out this Friday 24 July, certificate 15
FGM Across England & Wales
Support services for women and girls who have undergone Female Genital Mutilation might need to be reorganised as the results of a new study show that no local authority area across England and Wales is likely to be unaffected. Figures released by the women’s human rights organisation Equality Now show help is as likely to be needed in places such as Northampton, Milton Keynes, and Oxford, as in major cities like London or Birmingham. Anber Raz from joins Jane to discuss the picture that is emerging.Â
Girls And Apprenticeships
George Osborne’s recent budget introduced a new apprenticeship levy designed to improve the quality of apprenticeships on offer. But how many of the higher level apprenticeships are taken up by girls? Although just over half of all apprentices are girls, they are more likely to enter into lower paid industries, such as health, beauty, and social care, while boys take up construction and engineering – heading towards a much higher pay packet once qualified. Joining us to discuss this is Jessica Bestwick, a Higher Technical Apprentice at the Rolls Royce factory in Derby, and Dr Lynn Gambin, Research Fellow at the
End Of After School Care
End of primary school means a lot of things - the end of school gate chats, more homework, and many changes in friendship groups, for parents and children. But for many families the transition to senior school also means something else - no more endless searching for suitable and affordable after school care to enable parents to work, as Year 7s usually make their own way home. Fran Hyde from Colchester in Essex has two boys – Saul and Max. This September, Max starts ‘big school’, and it suddenly dawned on Fran that this was a kind of end-of-an-era for her and her on-call team of helpers. Catherine Carr went to meet Fran and Max, along with two of her longest-serving child-minders.
Female President Of Taiwan
Two female candidates are to go head to head in January’s Presidential Election in Taiwan. It means the country could follow in the footsteps of Thailand, the Philippines and South Korea by electing a female leader. Jane Garvey talks to Dr Dafydd Fell - a Reader in Comparative Politics, with a special interest in Taiwan, at , at the University of London - about the problems the country’s facing, and what a woman might bring to the leadership role.
