Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

I got back to London yesterday after a short break in the town where I was born and grew up – a little place called Burry Port that’s lapped by the gentle waves of Carmarthen Bay. It’s over fifty years since I first left home to study in Cardiff and I shall never forget that first journey into the wider world. I’d never been away – no holidays, no sleepovers, nothing – and I was filled to the brim with emotion as I said goodbye to my mother. You’d have thought I was going to Pluto rather than Cardiff and that sense of nostalgia has never left me.

That was roughly when I first heard a song that became my personal anthem in the years that followed. β€œThat’s my home,” it was called; it had been made famous by Louis Armstrong who’d made no fewer than four recordings of it. But the interpretation that got my goose-pimples rising was done by Acker Bilk and his Paramount Jazz Band. β€œWhere the sun sets in the sky, and flowers never die, and friends don’t pass you by – that’s my home.”

ΒιΆΉΤΌΕΔ is where our stories begin – not always bright and beautiful but the place where the narrative that shapes our lives was set in motion. ΒιΆΉΤΌΕΔ remains a reference point, it gives us our moral compass, it pins us to fundamental truths about ourselves and remains hauntingly within us whatever happens subsequently. β€œListen to me, all who follow after the right, who seek the Lord: consider the rock from which you were hewn; remember your father and your mother who gave you birth.” Thus spake the prophet of old.

Life goes on of course. Stuff happens. But there’s one thing I’ve never doubted. β€œI’m always welcome back no matter where I roam; it’s just a little shack but to me it’s home sweet home.”
