Pause For Thought
I got back to London yesterday after a short break in the town where I was born and grew up β a little place called Burry Port thatβs lapped by the gentle waves of Carmarthen Bay. Itβs over fifty years since I first left home to study in Cardiff and I shall never forget that first journey into the wider world. Iβd never been away β no holidays, no sleepovers, nothing β and I was filled to the brim with emotion as I said goodbye to my mother. Youβd have thought I was going to Pluto rather than Cardiff and that sense of nostalgia has never left me.
That was roughly when I first heard a song that became my personal anthem in the years that followed. βThatβs my home,β it was called; it had been made famous by Louis Armstrong whoβd made no fewer than four recordings of it. But the interpretation that got my goose-pimples rising was done by Acker Bilk and his Paramount Jazz Band. βWhere the sun sets in the sky, and flowers never die, and friends donβt pass you by β thatβs my home.β
ΒιΆΉΤΌΕΔ is where our stories begin β not always bright and beautiful but the place where the narrative that shapes our lives was set in motion. ΒιΆΉΤΌΕΔ remains a reference point, it gives us our moral compass, it pins us to fundamental truths about ourselves and remains hauntingly within us whatever happens subsequently. βListen to me, all who follow after the right, who seek the Lord: consider the rock from which you were hewn; remember your father and your mother who gave you birth.β Thus spake the prophet of old.
Life goes on of course. Stuff happens. But thereβs one thing Iβve never doubted. βIβm always welcome back no matter where I roam; itβs just a little shack but to me itβs home sweet home.βΒ
