Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought
It is almost Eid – the festival to mark the end of Ramadan – the month of fasting from before dawn to sunset. As the month currently falls in British summer time this means the fasts have been over 19 hours long.

You wake up at an unspeakable hourβ€”bleary eyed to eat and pray. You try and grab a couple of hours sleep again before the proper start to your day. Your body wonders β€œwhere’s breakfast” and that is the first hunger pang of the day. There is a tummy jolt where morning coffee usually is. Lunchtime finds the body demanding like a petulant child. By the time dinner should normally arrive there is a strange gasp – β€œstill three hours to go!” You eventually eat. Gratitude abounds. The body is exhausted, but there are still prayers to be done. Time for a quick cup of tea – a luxury of luxuries- before collapsing into bed, only to start it all again the next day.

I can hear the questions of β€œwhy on Earth do you do such a strange thing?”

I wonder myself sometimes. Yet there is a huge joy to the month.

Perhaps when you were a child there was a power cut, and you had to run around finding candles, and yet you remember it as a super adventure despite having cold beans for dinner. Β Or perhaps there was a Christmas when money was tight so the entire festival was spent playing board games and hide and seek with your family, yet for some strange reason you remember it as the happiest of all your Christmases. I think Ramadan is like that. Despite how hard it is – and it is very hard – it can bring out the best in people. There is a sense of solidarity with others in a time of collective difficulty, there is a shared experience of adversity. And that sense of belonging to something bigger than yourself is very, very special. Perhaps ultimately it is what we all yearn for, because joy when things are easy should be simple, but joy when things are hard – that is a powerful emotion.
