Ornette Coleman Tribute

Jez Nelson presents a special tribute programme to one of the greats of jazz and the avant-garde, saxophonist and composer Ornette Coleman, who died at the age of 85.

A special tribute programme to one of the giants of jazz and the avant-garde, saxophonist and composer Ornette Coleman, who died at the age of 85 earlier this month.

Coleman profoundly changed the course of jazz history in the late 1950s through albums such as 'The Shape of Jazz to Come', bringing a new harmonic freedom and way of interacting to the music. And he continued to push back the boundaries over the next half-century, whether as a founder of free jazz, through excursions into electric music, or collaborations with everyone from Pat Metheny to The Grateful Dead.

Jez Nelson is joined in the studio by John Fordham to chart Coleman's career through key recordings. The show includes favourite tracks and personal reflections from some of the musicians who worked closely with or were inspired by him, including singer Neneh Cherry, pianist Paul Bley, saxophonist Branford Marsalis and bass player Jamaaladeen Tacuma. We also hear exclusive archive interviews with trumpeter Don Cherry, and from the man himself: 'There's only 12 notes that satisfy the whole world - either you make something out of it, or you don't.'

Presenter: Jez Nelson
