It's Father's Day in Albert Square, and tensions are high as Buster questions Dean's intentions and Ian discovers a surprising truth.
In Patrick’s house, Shirley’s frustrated the DNA results haven’t arrived, oblivious to Buster sat out in the Square gardens with them. Nancy and Tracey erect a banner outside the Vic to welcome home baby Oliver; Nancy regrets if it were up to her Buster could join them to wet the baby’s head. Buster takes a bemused Dean to the park for a kick about and reminisces about playing football with his own father before he went to prison. Buster’s desperate to protect Dean from making mistakes and presses that taking on a child with CF is a big commitment. Dean’s adamant he can be a good father from seeing the way Kevin handled Jimbo. Placated, Buster hands over the results confirming Dean is Jade’s biological father.
Later, Dean spots Mick and Linda entering the Vic with baby Oliver and follows; he claims he’s happy for Linda, informs her he has a daughter and wants to move on. Stunned, Linda won’t shake hands and Dean gets irate, ranting he’s trying to make an effort. Mick orders him out and Buster pulls him away. Back home, Dean shows a delighted Shirley the test results but is outraged to learn Buster had them for days. Buster declares after his altercation with Linda he’s not sure Dean’s ready, insisting Dean’s messed up and pointing out Social Services will start probing inside his head - what if they ask questions about Linda? Dean storms off. Regretful, Buster seeks out Dean in the café, and explains he recognises Dean’s temper in himself and makes Dean consider if bringing Jade to Walford is the best thing for her - or him? Later, Dean announces Jade is better off without them. Irate Shirley vows to get custody of Jade herself.
Kush despairs as Masood and Shabnam continue to blank each other. Before heading off go-karting with Carmel, Kush presents Shabnam with a Father’s Day card but she refuses to give it to Masood. In the café, Carmel muses on the rules of Ramadan, unimpressed Kush isn’t celebrating his 30th birthday. When Kush worries about Shabnam, Carmel suggests he bring her and Masood together. Kush ropes in Tamwar to take Masood go-karting instead then sneaks into the empty house with Carmel. Martin’s eager to introduce Stacey to Rebecca, but it’s clear she feels awkward. Kush asks Stacey to get Shabnam to the Masoods’ later and Stacey produces the Father’s Day card that Shabnam’s written in - she’s not as stubborn as they think.
Kush enthuses she’s a good friend but Stacey’s not so sure and gives Kush an early birthday present - Umbrella cookies. Kush’s chuffed she knows they’re his favourites. Martin tries to talk to Stacey about his earlier blunder, then gets tongue tied and offers to end things. Stacey kisses him, amused. Later, Stacey and Martin drag Shabnam over the Square just as Masood and Tamwar return; they’re met by Kush and Carmel with a beautiful Iftar spread. Masood and Shabnam immediately start to bicker; Kush insists Ramadan is a time for forgiveness and presents Shabnam with the card, which she reluctantly hands to Masood. Masood reads and he and Shabnam hug. Shabnam’s touched they were all in on it and jokingly wonders if they have any other secrets; Martin blurts that he and Stacey are together. Kush locks eyes with Stacey, shocked.
Vincent’s frustrated when Patrick frostily refuses to join the family for a Father’s Day lunch. Kim explains Patrick is like this on days he’s reminded he lost both his sons. Later in the Vic, Vincent suggests Patrick focus on the family he still has, and hopes Patrick considers him a part of it. Patrick scoffs Vincent is just like his son, Paul, who died and almost dragged everyone down with him, and pointedly vows not to let that happen again.
Ian’s emotional when Bobby presents him with a photo frame with photos of Peter, Cindy, Bobby and Lucy. He and Jane are shocked when Carol arrives with a reluctant Cindy. The adults discuss Cindy hiding at the Butchers’; Cindy explodes she had nowhere to go and refuses to move home. Carol agrees she can stay with her for the night. Ian won’t have Cindy back home after her threat and begs Jane to convince Gina to have her in Devon. Jane phones Gina, then thinks better of it and cancels the call. She beseeches Carol to let Cindy stay and thrusts cash on her to cover the cost.
