Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

There was bad news for the Bottley household last week. News that could have an adverse effect on my whole family. The makers of that packaging staple, bubble wrap, are changing the recipe. With the brand new and so called, ‘improved’Ìý bubble wrap, the air from one bubble will simply slide into the next one instead of giving that satisfying ‘pop’ when squeezed. Being a bit of a big kid, I’ll admit that when as parcel arrives I’ll happily waste some time de-stressing by bursting all the bubbles on the sheet of bubble wrap.Ìý And with its own appreciation day (the 25th January incidentally) and its own dedicated social media fan pages, it seems I’m not alone, in my love of Bubble wrap and its relaxing capabilities.

There are lots of different ways to kick back and de-stress, gardening, hot baths, a good book, I have one vicar chum whose idea of relaxation is half an hour of thrash metal music and another who loves colouring books. Of course with the school’s summer breaks coming up many of us are looking forward to time away with family and friends. Time to relax and unwind, a holiday or a holy day, if you will. Holidays with the family and young kids can bring their own unique kind of ‘relaxing’ but de-stressing is important. And a holiday is time for normal services to be suspended and for rest, relaxation and recreation to take precedence. Holidays are time for a holy rest.

The Bible has plenty to say about the importance of resting, Jesus sleeps in a boat while the storm rages around him and God relaxes after the busy work of creation is finished, taking time to rest with all that has been made.

So whatever you do to relax, Chris when you take some time off, whether it’s a grand break to a tropical island, a day at the seaside or just an afternoon ‘de-stressing’ with a cup of tea and perhaps a sheet of bubble wrap. Happy holidays, have a holy break and a great and well-earned rest.
