Pause For Thought
Dates in the calendar offer opportunities for recalling events in our lives. We like anniversaries: they offer us a sense of time passing as well as opportunities to look back and remember. My son is getting married on Friday in California – and that date will be a special one for him and his wife-to-be every year after this one.
Of course not all anniversaries are pleasant. A feature of Jewish observance is the noting of a Yahrzeit – the Yiddish word for anniversary – marking the annual reminder of the death of a loved one. And we need little reminding that today is 7/7, the 7th of July. It was exactly ten years ago that terror came to the London Underground, and more than fifty people lost their lives.
I think we often feel powerless when confronted by death – especially the random nature of a terrorist attack. We know that it could so easily have been us: we travel on the London Underground, we take holidays in foreign countries. I discovered a couple of days ago that one of the British victims of the terrorist attack in Tunisia was a Watford supporter who sat one seat away from me with his injured girlfriend at Vicarage Road. They always seemed very happy together often in spite of what was happening on the pitch. I’m sure that the anniversaries they would have been anticipating were of the type that my son will be establishing later this week, not annual reminders of a terrible attack that robbed them of a future together.
Our precious human ability to remember is often a mixed blessing. Of course, it enables us to keep alive memories of those who have been taken from us, whatever the circumstances. But occasionally – and especially when the calendar reminds us of a particular anniversary – they cause us pain and grief.
The prophet Isaiah speaks of a day when ‘God will wipe away the tears from every face; when sorrow and sighing shall flee away.’ Such a day would indeed be worthy of commemorating: an anniversary offering only joy. Until then, our happiness will always be tempered by the knowledge that there is much pain in our world, felt especially keenly by those who recall loved ones on today’s difficult anniversary.
