Live from Glastonbury

Chris kicks off the Â鶹ԼÅÄ's coverage of the 2015 Glastonbury Festival with live music in the Â鶹ԼÅÄ Music Tepee from Gaz Coombes, Jack Savoretti and Texas, plus a whole heap of guests.

Wellies at the ready everyone, Chris Evans kicks off the Â鶹ԼÅÄ's coverage of the Glastonbury festival 2015 with live music in the Â鶹ԼÅÄ Music Tepee from Texas, Jack Savoretti and Gaz Coombes (who's celebrating the 20th anniversary of their debut I Should Coco and their first appearance at Glastonbury) and a whole heap of other guests!

Chris will catch up with our Â鶹ԼÅÄ colleagues from across radio and TV as they cover various aspects of this mammoth festival. We'll hear from Emily Eavis and many other fine festival folk, and let's not forget The Wurzels supplying all the jingles! Rock 'n' roll!

From Rev Nick Lakin, Methodist Minister for Glastonbury & Pilton:

It all began in 1970 when a member of the local village Methodist Church who was a farmer, had an idea… ‘How about hosting a pop festival on my farm?’ It would last for one day, the tickets would cost £1 and he would give everyone free milk as an incentive to come along. That farmer was Michael Eavis, and 45 years on, he’s still a member of the local village Methodist Church, and this wonderful festival is still held on his farm. In those early days, Michael had no idea what the Glastonbury Festival would become.

Today, this event attracts 200,000 people and is a showcase for the best acts from the music industry, theatre, comedy, cabaret and the circus, from all over the world – and it supports local and international charities. All this is a far cry from those relatively small beginnings – and it’s so much more than Michael’s original idea.

Concerned for the welfare of festival-goers, Michael encourages a small chaplaincy team, of which I’m a part, to be a visible Christian presence around the site; engaging, helping, listening. And, yes, we do get the opportunity to see some of the great performances. A highlight for me was U2 headlining on the Pyramid stage in 2011.

I remember one guy in particular from the many hundreds to call in to see us - I’ll call him John. He came to the festival a few years ago when his life was in a real mess and, in spite of the crowds of people on site, he felt very alone. He didn’t know where to turn. But he found himself at the Church Tent, which is open 24/7 and run by volunteers from Christians Together in Somerset. The folk he met there listened to his story, gave him a mug of tea and prayed with him. These small things meant that he left the festival feeling much more positive than when he arrived. John returned to the festival the following year and said he was so grateful because he had found a new job, a better place to live and a renewed sense of hope and faith for the future.

Jesus said: ‘If you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can move mountains.’ And the Christians on site this year will be offering welcome and hospitality to everyone, a listening ear, a cup of water, a mug of tea, support and help where it’s needed. These are all small things, but who knows what might grow from these small beginnings…
