Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought
From Sarah Joseph, Editor of a Muslim lifestyle magazine:

Ramadan starts today. No food or water from before dawn to sunset for 30 days. My feelings swing between trepidation and excitement.Β

Given the fasts are currently over 19 hours long my apprehension may well be understandable. My excitement may be a little harder to comprehend.Β Β

I love Ramadan. It is a when you try to be a better version of yourself. Where you undergo a spiritual and bodily cleansing. Where you strive to improve your relationships – with the Creator, with the community, with your friends, with your family, and with yourself. It is a time when you struggle to do more good-give extra in charity, be nicer to people, feed the hungry.Β

But there is always a risk. There is the risk of turning it into just another chance to consume – where ironically fasting is turned into constant thoughts of food, where celebration leads to excessive indulgence, where tiredness leads to total inaction. The Prophet warned, β€œMany receiveΒ nothingΒ from the fast exceptΒ hunger and thirst.” I am always nervous about falling into that trap.

I am also worried about feeling physically drained. Once today’s fast is over I will probably be exhausted, and I hate that. Yet that feeling is a reminder in and of itself.

Ultimately, even though the fasts are very very long, I will be able to end my hunger. I will be able to sit down to a table spread with wonderful delicacies.

The same cannot be said for vast swathes of the world’s population who experience hunger – not as a voluntary act of worship – but as a way of life. Hunger and malnutrition are the number one risk to health worldwide β€” greater than AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis combined. 1 in 9 adults and children will go to bed hungry every day of the year.Β

Ramadan stands as a means to highlight these global inequalities. It is a time to remember that hunger is entirely solvable. That 50% of food grown is wasted.Β

The Earth is bountiful. There is enough for us all. The distribution is unfair, and Ramadan is a reminder that such an injustice is not acceptable, and our hunger is a reminder to do something about it.
