Pause For Thought
From Father Brian DβArcy a Catholic Passionist priest:
There comes a time itβs fitting to put a shape on the lessons life has taught us. Iβm in that mood today. Samuel Johnson, the 18th Century English critic, said it was by studying the little things, βthat we attain the great art, of having as little misery, and as much happiness, as possible.β
One of the books I go back to constantly is Victor Franklβs Manβs Search For Meaning, where he writes about the three years he was imprisoned at Auschwitz and Dachau. There, despite all the brutality, he learned about love and the human spirit. In the Concentration Camps he remembers prisoners who though close to death from hunger themselves, each day comforted others, and gave away their own meagre rations to strangers in greater need.
Admittedly they were few in number, but still offered proof that you can take away everything from a person, but you cannot steal their innate goodness, nor their freedom to do what is decent. In my own life when I lower my bucket into the well of wisdom, I discover that -:
The meaning of life is found in the joy of selfless giving; in the satisfaction of giving hope to the hopeless; and in finding God in the most God forsaken hellholes.
We are not satisfied by fame, luxurious, wealth or power, these rewards can cause as many problems as they solve.
What we search for is meaning, knowing that, βMy life is a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes.β (James 4:14)
We have to figure out how to spend our lives and our energies on the things that make a difference.
We need to be sure our lives matter; that our efforts are worthwhile; that the world is better because we were here. At my age, I have discovered another disturbing truth -: Donβt worry about avoiding temptation β at 70 temptation avoids you!Β
