Jodi Picoult

The best-selling author and her daughter, Samantha Van Leer, join Jane to talk about the new book which they’ve written together. Off The Page is the story of Prince Oliver, who’s transported from the pages of a fairy tale to 21st Century New Hampshire by a typical American teenager, Delilah. The book's a sequel to the writers’ earlier story, Between The Lines, and has a lot of fun with the contrasts between contemporary American high school life and the fantasy land from which Oliver has come. Jodi’s a multi-million selling writer whose books have tackled gritty social issues like date rape, suicide, and school shootings, so how has she adapted to writing young adult  fiction?  Samantha is at college studying psychology – what’s it been like for her to write a book with her mother?

Off the Page by Jodi Picoult and Samantha Van Leer is published on 4 June

Couples Who Clash Over Parenting Styles

What can you do if you and your partner have completely different approaches to parenting? Nadim and Carole Saad found that they had fallen into good cop, bad cop roles when it came to disciplining their kids. This clash was damaging their relationship and also making them less effective at parenting. They’ve written a book called Kid’s Don’t Come with a Manual about the solution the found to this common problem.

Primogeniture

Earl Spencer, Princess Diana’s brother, has said he’s leaving his stately pile to his oldest son Louis, rather than to his three, older daughters. He claims it’s a practical move that will keep the house in the family. It’s not the law - members of the aristocracy can leave their land to daughters if they wish - but primogeniture does still tend to reign supreme. Victoria Lambert is a health journalist and also the Countess of Clancarty, and part of an online campaign - the Hares - to ensure every title or office of state can be passed down the generations on equal terms.

God – He or She?

A group in the Church of England has been discussing whether the language it uses in its services could be more inclusive. With the appointments of its first women bishops and calls for women’s experiences to be more fully recognised, what is the current debate about, and what does it tell us about the position of women in the Anglican Church? Jane talks to Caroline Wyatt, the Â鶹ԼÅÄ’s Religious Affairs Correspondent.

Gossip

We all love to gossip, but what impact does it have on us, both in the short and long term, and how’s social media influencing who we talk about and why? Jane talks to psychologist Jenny Cole, and to showbiz journalist Hannah Hope – Deputy Editor of the Daily Mirror’s 3am column.
