The UN says more than 6,400 people have died in the fighting between Ukrainian forces and rebels backed by Russia and more than a million have lost their homes. The latest manifestation of that is a ban by Moscow on some British politicians and diplomats travelling to Russia.Β  Sergey Karaganov was foreign policy adviser to both Boris Yeltsin and President Putin.

James Gilray is widely regarded as the father of the political cartoon. His most famous was a wonderful drawing of William Pitt the Younger sitting at a dining table with Napoleon and carving up a plum pudding representing a map of the world. Pitt's slice is much bigger than Napoleon's.Β  Now, 200 years later, Gilray's successors have been celebrating the great man's life. Nicola Stanbridge reports.

Next week the judicial review into London's Garden Bridge will get underway. Its backers say it's a futuristic project that will benefit the city, but critics say nice plan but it's a folly that should never be built. The Labour leadership candidates are all trying to explain what went wrong for their party in the general election. And naturally they start from the fact that they failed badly. Nowhere more spectacularly than in Scotland where all but one of their 41 seats were won by the SNP, sweeping away some huge majorities. Johann Lamont led Scottish Labour until last autumn.

US scientists say they have found seven sawfish in south-west Florida that are the product of virgin births. This type of abnormal reproduction has been observed in captivity, but virgin-born offspring have never been seen in the wild before. The discovery, published in the journal Current Biology, suggests this behaviour may be a natural response to dwindling numbers. Andrew Fields is lead author of the study.

When enjoying a great meal the moment stays with you, especially if the food is good. But changing the lighting in the room, the shape of the plate, the weight of the cutlery can all change the way a dish tastes. Professor Charles Spence has coined the term β€œgastrophysics”.
