Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

From Leslie Griffiths, Methodist Minister:

Christians are celebrating the festival called Pentecost. It centres on an extraordinary scene in longago Jerusalem. People had come from all over the place; they spoke different languages; they were all visitors to the city. A man named Peter got up in front of them; he spoke out to them in all their diversity yet, somehow, everyone seemed to understand what he was saying. Each heard as if he’d been speaking their own language. No one has ever fully explained this but Christians put it down to the work of the Spirit of God who brought people the gift of understanding. And that’s what we celebrate.

I’ve stood on a rickety stand at Speakers’ Corner in Hyde Park and tried to say something cheerful, hopeful, challenging to the people gathered there. It’s always a lively experience. Some people come to heckle for the fun of it, others hate religion and want you to know it; it’s always been a tourist attraction and there were often people from all over the world. It was quite an art to keep their attention let alone say something they could warm to, be inspired by.

It was there that I discovered a language beyond words, a language that knows nothing about grammar; it’s the language of the heart. Everyone has a deep longing for love, there’s a universal desire to be free from worry and fear and to enjoy life. And it’s possible to communicate with people at the level of their loves and longings, their hopes and their troubles, even when there is no common language. A love of people, respect for them wherever they come from, whatever their circumstances, somehow speaks directly to people’s deepest psyche.

I believe that that’s what happened all those years ago in Jerusalem. It was the miracle of understanding, a miracle desperately needed in our own day and in our own lives.
