Pause For Thought

 Every day thousands of business deals are made round the world. Most of them don’t affect many people and as the saying goes ‘they’re no big deal.’ But just occasionally there is a big deal. Recently a mobile phone company paid literally billions to buy another phone company. That’s a big deal. But sometimes a big deal involves a small amount of money and passes by unnoticed. That’s the story of the purchase of the island of Manhattan that happened on this day in 1626.  Canny Dutchman Peter Minuit paid the local Native American tribe 60 Dutch guilders for Manhattan - and so began the town of New Amsterdam, later renamed New York. Even if we put those 60 Guilders into present day values, Manhattan was bought for just £1,000.  A bargain – or perhaps a rip-off may be a better description.

Buying Manhattan, that is a big deal though it wasn’t obvious at the time – especially to the Native Americans.  So how do we decide if something is or is not a big deal? What is a big deal for me? My own mother says that in her long life the most important thing she has ever done is give birth. That’s a big deal that happens millions of times every day but passes unnoticed except by close family and friends. For me, the big deal in life is to do something every day that gives hope to others – like donating to a homeless charity. Or it might be a great big deal like dedicating my life to God to pass on the Christian faith. The point is that in ways both small and great, anybody can clinch a big deal every day if they reach out and give hope to others. Dealing in hope costs even less than Manhattan but makes an even bigger impact, even though it isn’t obvious at the time.
