Pause For Thought
From Revered Kate Bottley, Vicar of the churches of Blyth, Scooby and Ranskill:
I’m vicar of 3 very rural parishes where the vicar of Dibley is less of a sitcom and more of a documentary and because we are so rural we are used to lots of animals in our church. We regularly have butterflies, plagues of ladybirds, bats and once a tiny field mouse put in an appearance during a funeral, luckily no one but me and the undertaker spotted him, before he dashed under a pew. But last Sunday while you were giving your all running the marathon Chris, we had ‘bring your pet to church day’. It was a slightly chaotic service and short, curtailed before any of our furry guests forgot their manners or had an ‘accident’. Freya and Ben brought their Labrador, Mabel, there was a pug, a husky, my greyhound, two rabbits Ann Bunlyn and Mary Hoppins and little Emily introduced me to the simple creatures that are African Land snails, apparently partial to cuttlefish and spinach. Emily who’s 5 announced to the congregation rather sadly that Giant African land snails can’t really do tricks.
Penny the dog though is a different matter. Penny had been coming to church for weeks practising to be the ring bearer at her owners Ed and Charlotte’s wedding. She was brilliant in rehearsal and got everything perfect first time, the walk down the aisle, the sit, the stay and the important response to ‘Do you have the rings?’ when she was supposed to lift her paw and present a small velvet pouch. But on the day it all proved rather too much and half way down the aisle the pouch fell off her paw and Penny needed a wee. No one really minded of course.
Things go wrong, stuff doesn’t always work out how we thought it might and sometimes we end up with a wonderful chaos which is nothing like we originally planned. No one can know what tomorrow will bring and worrying about it won’t change it, Jesus said ‘Do not worry about tomorrow for tomorrow has enough worries of its own.’ Good advice, and who knows, in not worrying and letting things happen we may just end up with a wonderful chaos which was far better than anything we could have ever planned.
