Pause For Thought
From comedian & writer Paul Kerensa:
Our little girl turns two next week. It seems like only yesterday that she was still crying out in her sleep, keeping us awake all night... because it was only yesterday. Indeed, sleep training and night-lights haven鈥檛 solved that particular 3am bundle of fun yet.
Maybe it鈥檚 because her brain is whirring with the stuff of each day. There鈥檚 new vocab daily: She wants her second favourite song? She鈥檒l enquire 鈥-et It Go?鈥. And her favourite? She won鈥檛 stop singing the jingle 鈥淓eby-Cee Rabio 2!鈥
Her new phrase of the week has been useful: 鈥淗ep me!鈥, she鈥檒l utter, wanting help, to return a toy to its box, or put on her shoes.
We all know the importance of giving help where needed: from the Good Samaritan to aid agencies being sent to Nepal as we speak. More of us could do more, I know 鈥 but so often those great at helping aren鈥檛 so good at asking for it. I help her as a parent, but I don鈥檛 ask for help enough myself. Even aid-workers needs aid. And physician, heal thyself. Even marathon-runners 鈥 whether publicised or completely in secret, you sly fox! 鈥 only cross the finishing-line, if at some point they鈥檝e asked for water.
Of all the phrases my daughter鈥檚 learned, asking for help has moved her on the most. It makes her reach further, aiming for things previously too high, too difficult, too confiscated.
At some point we stop growing physically 鈥 and I think we often pretend we鈥檝e stopped growing emotionally, spiritually, inside. We can think we鈥檙e fully formed, and it seems weak to seek help. But I think it鈥檚 a strength, if it moves us on, whether asking the Almighty in prayer, or a counsellor in confidence. The writer David Allen put it: 鈥淵ou can do anything. But not everything.鈥 It takes strength to ask for guidance, boldness to ask in prayer, and courage to phone a helpline.
But how quickly we forget. Two days after my daughter learned to ask for help, she鈥檚 learned its polar opposite: 鈥淣o I can do it!鈥 So I鈥檒l ask for help first: If anyone can get a toddler to sleep without crying out at 3am, I鈥檇 welcome your tweets: please do 鈥渉ep me鈥.聽
