Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

From Julia Neuberger, Senior Rabbi at the west London Synagogue

Last Tuesday saw the opening in Cork, Ireland, of a small exhibition of my mother鈥檚 collection of 20th century prints, black and white artwork by a variety of artists. That wouldn鈥檛 be particularly remarkable, except that she started collecting when she was totally broke, in the 1950s, having been blocked from going to art school in Germany in the 1930s because she was Jewish. She was one of the lucky ones. She came to Britain, she worked hard, she made friends, and when she was facing her death, having been here for 64 of her 86 years, she admitted she鈥檇 had a much better life in Britain than she would ever have achieved in small town Germany. But her lack of art school education rankled all her life. So, perhaps to compensate, she became an avid collector. She supported young print makers, she worked briefly in a gallery, and to her dying day she read art catalogues like the rest of us might read a crime novel!聽

So celebrating her great eye for art, a couple of weeks before what would have been her 100th birthday, was an enormous pleasure. But the exhibition is entitled 鈥楧isplaced鈥- making the point that being displaced, the discomfort of being a refugee or a migrant, may have a particular effect. For people rarely really want to leave home and country for ever. The western world has given a rotten welcome to migrants and refugees in recent years, and the tragedies unfolding before our eyes on the Mediterranean Sea make that all too clear. And yet,聽I believe聽for those who do make it, and settle, there is a great desire to do the most, the best they possibly can. It鈥檚 a mixture of 鈥淚鈥檒l show鈥檈m鈥, and wanting to bring some kind of credit to the poor unfortunates left behind. So when we hear vicious talk about immigrants or asylum seekers,聽I think it鈥檚 worth remembering聽the Biblical instruction to treat the stranger well, 鈥渇or you were strangers in the land of Egypt.鈥澛營f we聽treat them kindly, you鈥檒l be amazed at what talent, energy, and sheer determination they will show in repaying the hospitality shown to them.
