Pause For Thought
From Abdul Rehman-Malik
Chris, I donβt know about you, but I find it hard to play video games. My kid brother often asks me to join him in his latest mission to mow down virtual zombies or some nasty villain, but I always refuse. Iβm too much of a klutz to navigate the complex controls. Frankly, I worry that theyβll be so much fun that Iβll become addicted. Μύ<?xml:namespace prefix = "o" ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
Μύ
During my middle school years, my friends and I spent much of free time playing a game called Dungeons & Dragons. It required no consoles or controllers. We developed and role-played characters and set out on elaborate quests led by a βDungeon Masterβ, who was part storyteller, part referee and would guide us through our adventures.
Μύ
Every spare moment was spent planning our next session. We studiously kept notes on our characters and rolled dice to determine the outcomes of battles. We yearned for the day that weβd finally be able to face the greatest enemy of all: the dragon.
Μύ
St George - who we remember today - knew something about dragons.
Μύ
George, a Christian from Palestine, was a decorated soldier in the Roman armies. By all accounts he was a model warrior β chivalrous and noble. Yet when the Emperor Diocletian, worried by the rise of the Christian faith and its call to reject the pagan gods of old, asked all his soldiers to renounce the new faith, George refused. ΜύGifts of a title and money were turned down.Μύ
Μύ
George, it is said, gave whatever wealth he had to the poor and faced his execution firm in his resolve that he β and others like him β should be able to believe as they chose to believe. Such is the enduring quality of his legend, that Christians and Muslims alike have visited his shrine together for more than a thousand years.
Μύ
βThe ego,β cautioned the mystic Rumi, βis a true dragon with immeasurable strength and cunning.β
Μύ
I have no doubt St George slew his dragon.
Μύ
I think fondly of those long-ago afternoons spent fighting wizards and warlocks. On this St Georgeβs Day I pray that I am able to once again capture the purity of that youthful quest. Except now I hope I will bring my passion to ridding myself of faults that stop me being the person I want to be.Μύ Those truly are the hardest dragons to slay.
