Moore’s Law turns 50 years old this Sunday. In April 1965 a 36-year old electronics buff jotted down his thoughts on the future of the juvenile silicon chip industry. In an article published in Electronics Magazine, he predicted that the number of transistors on a silicon chip would double every year for ten years.Ìý He later revised the forecast to doubling every two years or so, as the initial breakneck speed of development and shrinkage waned. It was a prediction that became known as Moore's Law and it has helped drive the computer revolution over the last four decades. Angela Saini is a broadcaster and science & technology journalist.

In 2010 not a sinlge seat in Scotland changed hands between the parties, compared with the previous general election. That's the one thing that wont happen on May 7. All the parties here expect convulsions. The focus has been on the volcanic struggle for supremacy between Labour and the nationalists in central Scotland.Ìý But that's not the whole picture. Remember for example that the conservatives, though they bagged only 1 seat in 2010, had nearly 17% of the vote, only about 3 behind the SNP.I've been looking a ttwo adjacent seats in North-east Scotland where the pattern IST the familiar - Labour-Nationalist fight. is quite differetent. Tomorrow the seat where Alex Slamond is trying to make a return to Westminster. And this mornign West Aberdeenshire and Kincardine, stretching westwards from the Aberdeen suburbs to the Cairngorms and south through the rich farmland of the Mearns. IN this part of Scotland the vote in the referendum was firmly against independence - by about 60-40 - and the question for the parites on the 'No' side - Conservative, Liberal Democrat, Labour -Ìý is whether that translates into difficulty for the rampant SNP.
