Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

From Father Brian D’Arcy a Catholic Passionist priest:

When I was young Christmas was my favourite time of year. As I grow older I still think Christmas is a lovely season but I get more comfort from Easter.

The famous orator Clarence Hall summed up my feelings perfectly when he preached: β€œIf Easter says anything to us today it is this: β€˜you can put Truth in a grave but it won’t stay there. You can nail it to a cross and shut it in a tomb but it will rise.’”

The season of spring joins in the celebrations too and awakens us from our winter slumber. Bright evenings dispel the darkness which had almost formed a crust around our heart. Budding bushes, laughing daffodils and birds sweetly singing, prayerfully whisper Easter’s promise of a second chance, especially those on the verge of despair.

Pope Saint John Paul 11 at the beginning of his reign told Christians: β€œDon’t give in to despair, we are an Easter people and Alleluia is our song.”  Singing for joy is a totally appropriate way to celebrate Easter, spring and the precious gift of new life.

Easter then is not a time for dusty old dogmas or arguments but is an opportunity for all of us to fan the ashes of hope, to banish doubts and to rejoice in living life to the full. The glory of God is a human being fully alive, was a favourite saying of the church Father Iranaeus.

I believe the joys of Easter makes it easier to understand that God loves each of us as if there were only one of us.

However the most lasting Easter gift is peace. It’s no accident that every time Jesus appeared after rising from the dead, his first words always were: β€œPeace be with you.”

That’s my wish for us this morning – wherever you are and whatever you believe, may you be drenched with inner peace. May your life be blessed with love, beauty and hope. Happy Easter.
