Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

From Father Brian D’Arcy a Catholic Passionist priest:

Some time ago a mother brought her three children to me, asking me to pray with them asking God to bless the family. I was so humbled by her that I got her permission to tell you about it. All of her three children have serious, though quite different, illnesses. The mother also suffers ongoing physical pain. To add to her worries she’s now a single parent.

In our monastery at The Graan in Enniskillen there is a life-sized figure of Christ on the cross. She asked me to help her family pray before this cross, because she wanted to be assured the family’s suffering was in some way truly connected with the sufferings of Jesus on that first Good Friday.

After our quiet prayers she turned to me with an astounding comment: β€œI know now that when Jesus died, he helped us in our suffering.”  She then handed me a card with a verse from the prophet Isaiah: β€˜He was chastised that we might have peace. He suffered and we were healed’.

That was the day I was given a powerful lesson on the relevance of Good Friday and Easter.

Dr Elizabeth Kubler-Ross was famous for her books on grief. She discovered that the most beautiful people she knew were those who endured defeat, suffering and loss, and who found a way out of those depths.

In my own ministry I’ve learned that the God of Calvary is truly the God of the emergency room and the Hospice; the God of the homeless, broken families and broken relationships.

He’s the God of dark places who at Easter always finds a crack where the light gets in.Β  Β  Β  Β  Β  Β  Β  Β Β
