Our Marvellous Monday show kicks off to a cracking start with Eden and her kazoo record for Comic Relief...

And The Urban Birder David Lindo sings the praises of our feathered friends and discusses which species will rule the roost in the hunt for Britain's national bird...

Today's Show is dedicated to all our Â鶹ԼÅÄ Nations and Six Nations teams after the weekend - weren't they just exemplary?
And today's show is entitled: it's never too late to have a good idea. In Ancient Rome, Caesar was killed just a few hours after inventing his famous salad!

Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

From Canon Ann Easter, Chief Executive of a Charity and Chaplain to the Queen:

I had a very nice Mothering Sunday yesterday with presents and cards from my children – but we were also celebrating my older son’s birthday – he was actually born one Mothering Sunday – so I was doing the cooking too – the full roast beef experience, by request!

And I thought of my own mother, in Heaven some 20 years now, and all that was so special about her. Her name was Audrey but she hated it and called herself Ann – hence my name; she was heavily influenced by the British film stars of the 40’s and 50’s and saw Greer Garson, Celia Johnson and Deborah Kerr as role models; she was always very chic and despaired of my sister and me when we got into mini skirts and hotpants, because she didn’t think they were elegant. In my Mum’s view, good shoes and handbag – and that could only mean leather - were classic signs of a well-dressed woman. One of her favourite sayings, when she heard us speaking quickly and with our East end accents, was ‘Lower and Slower’ – but, in spite of her efforts, I don’t think I ever sounded posh!

Another favourite was ‘If you can’t say anything nice, don’t say anything’, always good advice. If we didn’t have time for a proper wash she’d make us have ‘a lick and a promise’ but the hankie was always on hand to be licked and rubbed vigorously on marks on our faces when necessary.

My Mum constantly worried about us and very much wanted us to be the best we could possibly be; she would often correct and admonish us and she knew us inside out, warts and all, but we were always sure of her love and unstinting support.

And though I know that the human picture of God is usually an old, wise, sometimes angry, man, I can’t help but think that there’s more to God than male, and that much of what we see in earthly mothering is a reflection of the motherhood of God on whose love I believe we can depend eternally.
