Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

From Canon Ann Easter, Chief Executive of a Charity and Chaplain to the Queen:

Well it鈥檚 Happy Birthday to Barbara Millicent Roberts who鈥檚 56 today. I imagine that she鈥檒l have a nice day with colleagues at work and perhaps dinner out this evening, maybe with Ken her long time partner- but not necessarily! I鈥檓 not sure if she ever had children but, if she did, they鈥檒l have left home now and be well established.聽 Like most of us, her waist has thickened a little over the years and she now looks you in the eye rather than glancing coyly sideways as she did when she first hit the toyshops.

Yes, I鈥檓 talking about Barbie, that curvaceous blonde doll who鈥檚 amused us with her pets, her cars and her outfits all these years; she has the clothes to be everything from a doctor to an astronaut, though not a priest 鈥 or, at her stage of life, she could be a Bishop! I鈥檒l have to design a little cope and mitre for her!

It鈥檚 great that Barbie鈥檚 amused us 鈥 but with International Women鈥檚 Day just yesterday, I鈥檓 looking for strong, capable role models to inspire and encourage every girl, and boy, to live the full, productive life that God intends for all of us 鈥 not just the pretty ones.

I conducted a funeral service on Friday and I noticed that there was a woman minister officiating in another chapel at the same time as me and then a funeral cortege arrived with a woman directing it 鈥 top hat, cane and all! But I doubt if anyone else noticed - it鈥檚 no longer anything to make a fuss about - gone are the days, thank goodness, when someone asked the undertaker 鈥榃ill the service be any cheaper if a woman takes it?鈥!!

Interestingly, there are a number of stories in the Bible about Jesus interacting with women in a way that was very unusual, even scandalous, for his time; he talked to women on their own, touched them and healed them; he was a man, so I can鈥檛 believe he understood women 鈥 but he certainly loved them and that gives me the confidence to go on striving for a proper equality.

When Barbie doll is short and dumpy and her grey hair won鈥檛 go right 鈥 then I鈥檒l know we鈥檙e getting there鈥.
