Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

From Father Christopher Jamison, Benedictine Monk:

So why are the book and TV series about Thomas Cromwell called Wolf Hall? Well, firstly, it's the name of the Wiltshire home of the Seymour family, Jane Seymour being, spoiler alert!, the third wife of Henry VIII. But as well as referring to the Seymour home, Wolf Hall may also be a reference to the ancient Latin saying "homo homini lupus" that translates as "Man is a wolf to man." In other words, people tear each other to pieces, and in the original novel of Wolf Hall, Thomas Cromwell quotes this saying when he watches courtiers hound to death his employer, Cardinal Wolsey. Throughout Thomas' life, everybody seems to be a wolf towards everybody else. So is being a wolf the only way to survive? I say no because what makes humans special is our ability to go against the killer instinct by forgiving others and even putting other people's welfare above our own.

The cruelty of the Tudor era is seen in modern times under the Nazi regime but even in those cruel times people were capable of selfless heroism. For example, in the concentration camp at Auschwitz, as punishment for an attempted escape from the camp, the commandant chose 10 prisoners to be executed. One of those chosen was a married man who begged for mercy because he had a wife. At which point, another prisoner, a Catholic priest called Fr Maximilian Kolbe, volunteered to take the place of the married man and died in his place. That man and his wife lived to see Maximilian declared a saint. Maximilian shows us that "Man is a saint to man." Wolf Hall is great fiction but there are other, true stories which remind us that a person can choose to be a saint rather than a wolf.
