Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought
From Father Christopher Jamison, Benedictine Monk:

When I watch a historical drama such as Wolf Hall I'm shocked by the limited scientific knowledge of 16th century people and by the appalling violence they used against each other. Yet I admire in them something which we don't value in our time. In those days, they wanted to know about the soul. People nowadays talk about enjoying soulful music or hating soulless bureaucrats but they rarely ask what is the soul and how does it work. People like Thomas More were dedicated to the science of the soul and they saw in it the source of a person's deepest desires. But we can think that superficial want is the same as what we truly desire. For example, a person may want to buy a friend an expensive gift but what they really desire is to be loved by their friend. Distinguishing between daily wants and deep desires is a key skill in the science of the soul. Many of our deepest desires are good but some can be pretty dark, for example, revenge, something clearly seen in Wolf Hall. Soul science enables me to be honest about myself so that I can reject the bad and act on my best desires. I can step away from revenge and freely choose forgiveness. The toughest call is when good and honourable desires are in conflict with one another. For example I may want a child to experience freedom but I also want to protect them. We have to prioritise. And that's what we see in the life of Thomas More. He said that he was the King's faithful servant but God's servant first. Staying true to your most important, honourable desire can be costly, as More discovered. As he said: 'If honour were profitable everybody would be honourable.'Β
