Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

From The Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu:

Μύ

I spoke recently to a group of sixth form students, at Archbishop Holgate’s Academy in York, who are completing the Key Stage 4 Young Leaders Award, as developed by my Youth Trust.

We talked about study, vocations, assisted dying, same gender relationships, the FA cup draw and politics. They asked me just about everything and anything!

Students completing my Young Leaders Award look closely at what makes a great leader and how best to serve others. They get to know more about people such as Elizabeth Fry, Mahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther King Jr and Archbishop Desmond Tutu.

Nelson Mandela’s anniversary of his release from 27 years in prison is tomorrow on the 11th of February. He was a great leader whose gracious magnanimity ultimately led to the first democratic elections for all South Africans.

Just like those sixth-formers - it is when we look outwards and ask questions of God and the Universe that we discover more about ourselves and our own place in the world around us.

To those who say that the Church should not be involving itself in matters such as politics - I say β€œMy faith compels me to be involved”.

Christianity – like other great religions – embodies a body of principles by which all our plans and actions, both private and public, can both be motivated and judged. Yes, of how the world should be and what moral principles and virtues it should reflect. Principles which move us into loving-actions.

My Christian vision is about promoting the well-being of all. May I encourage us all to look to build skills and confidence, pay a living wage, understand and exercise responsibility for ourselves and towards others. What a transformation this would bring.

We are not just our brother’s keeper, our sister’s keeper. We are our brother’s brother, our sister’s sister.
