Secret eating, Teacher-pupil relationships, Julie Hesmondhalgh

Jane Garvey looks at teacher-pupil relationships and why there is still debate about who the 'victim' is in cases where sex has occurred. Why do we eat in secret?

We look at teacher/pupil relationships and why there is still debate about whom the 'victim' is in cases where sex has occurred. Julie Hesmondhalgh is best known for playing Hayley Cropper, Coronation Street's first transgender character. Now she has a new part in Russell T Davies's latest drama, Cucumber, playing Cleo, sister of gay man Henry. Research at the University of Surrey has shown that potassium salts, found in fruit and veg, can help prevent osteoporosis. Dr Helen Lambert talks about the new research, and we ask GP Clare Gerada how we can best get health messages across to the public. Medieval princess Eleanor De Montfort is known as the 'Mother of the Parliament'. Louise Wilkinson, Professor of Medieval History talks about her significant role in the creation of the earliest Parliament in Britain. Eating in secret can range from the harmless but guilty pleasure of eating peanut butter straight from the jar to an indication or symptom of an eating disorder. We consider why some people eat in private and when it becomes a problem.

Teacher/Pupil Relationships, β€˜Grooming’ and Responsibility

In sentencing ex-teacher, Stuart Kerner, this week for his 18 month relationship with a 16 year old pupil, Joanna Greenberg QC said the teenager had β€˜groomed’ him.Β Woman’s Hour looks at why there is still a debate about who the β€˜victim’ is in these cases.Β And besides the obvious professional guidelines, is there enough honest training and conversation within schools about how to deal with these situations?

Julie Hesmondhalgh

Most people know her as the loveable Hayley Cropper, Coronation Street’s first transgender character. But after the death of Hayley last year, Julie Hesmondhalgh has moved on to otherΒ  roles. She’ll be playing Cleo, sister of gay man, Henry, in Channel 4’s new comedy series, Cucumber, part of a trilogy of programmes written by Russell T Davies. She also appears in the other two programmes, Banana and Tofu. She joins Jane on Monday to about her various roles.Β

Eleanor De Montfort

The ΒιΆΉΤΌΕΔ is marking the 750th Anniversary of the first elected parliament at Westminster. Louise Wilkinson argues that Eleanor De Montfort is the β€˜Mother of the Parliament’. She rebelled against her own brother King Henry III and played a significant role during the earliest Parliament in Britain, created by her husband Simon De Montfort in 1265.

Eating in Secret

Eating in secret can range from the guilty pleasure of eating peanut butter straight from the jar to an indication or symptom of an eating disorder. It can be linked to feelings of indulgence guilt and shame. But where do these feelings come from? Where’s the line between a guilty pleasure and a potential β€œproblem” with food.

Sarah Rainey from the Telegraphy and Deanne Jade founder of the National Centre for Eating Disorders join Jane to talk about feelings of guilt and shame linked to eating in private and some of the reasons behind it.Β
