Julian Joseph presents a special South African-themed programme featuring concert music from UK-South African group The Blue Notes recorded at the 2014 EFG London Jazz Festival.

Julian Joseph presents a special South African themed programme featuring concert music from the
the 2014 incarnation of celebrated South African group 'The Blue Notes', recorded on the Jazz Line-Up stage at the 2014 London Jazz Festival.

The original line-up of the legendary group boasted many of Africa's influential and leading lights including Chris McGregor on piano, Mongezi Feza on trumpet, Dudu Pukwana on alto saxophone, Nikele Moyake on tenor saxophone, Johnny Dyani on bass, and Louis Moholo on drums. The majority of these musicians and others such as Julian Bahula, Mervin Africa, Ernest Motley, Bheki Mseleku sought refuge and political asylum in Britain to escape the injustice of the apartheid system.

The 2014 version of the band features Bokani Dyer (Piano), Soweto Kinch (Alto Saxophone), Percy Persglove (Trumpet) , Karl Rasheed (Bass), Mark Sanders (Drums) and former Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Radio 3 New Generation Jazz Artist Shabaka Hutchings (Tenor Saxophone) who was appointed the role of musical director for the project by original Blue Notes drummer Louis Moholo Moholo.

Also on the programme Shabaka selects some of his favourite South African jazz recordings sourced from recent research trip giving a flavour of the rich, colourful and fertile jazz scene in the country.
