Freedom Of Expression In France And The Burqa

Following the massacre last week at the offices of the satirical magazine ‘Charlie Hebdo’, commentators denounced it as an attack on democracy and the cherished values of freedom of speech and expression. But last year the European Court of Human Rights upheld the French government’s ban on the burqa which came into effect in 2011, and which many  Muslims women regard as an infringement of their right to freedom of expression. So how do we reconcile these apparent contradictions in France ? Jane is joined by Tehmina Kazi,  the director of and by , a writer and broadcaster on France and the Middle East.

Debbie Wiseman - Wolf Hall Music

Debbie Wiseman is a film and television composer and trained in formal composition at Guildhall School of Music. She's written well over a hundred scores for TV and film including comedy, romance and action-thriller.  Now she’s turned her considerable talents to historical drama and has composed the music for the forthcoming and highly- anticipated Â鶹ԼÅÄ drama - WOLF HALL - based on the Hilary Mantel novels about Thomas Cromwell’s relationship with Henry the Eighth.  She joins Jane to talk about how crucial music is in recreating the atmosphere of Henry’s court.

Parental Leave And Teenagers

Parents are currently allowed to take up to 18 weeks of unpaid leave up until their child’s fifth birthday – this is in addition to maternity and paternity leave. From April, the age limit will increase to 18.  So are teen years a time when parental support is needed more? And how understanding are workplaces of requests for leave or flexible working from parents of older children? Sally Brett, Senior Policy Officer at the TUC, joins Jane in the studio.
