Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

From Father Brian D’Arcy a Catholic Passionist priest:

They say if you want to make God laugh, tell him your plans for the future. That’s why I’m taking time to reflect on my life in these limbo days between Christmas and New Year.Β  Depending on circumstances this might have been the best or the worst year of your life so far. For me it was a crazy mixture of both.

In January, because of a cancer scare, I was convinced 2014 would be my last year. Twelve months later I’m still healthy and here.Β  I now know what β€œgrateful” means.

For most of us this year, like every other year we survive, was a potent mixture of good and bad; a time when mistakes were made and lessons learned; a time to be thankful that despite everything we lived to fight another year.

I was mightily impressed recently when I read what mountain climber Pat Falvey, wrote about his greatest achievement. He described his arrival at the summit of Mount Everest .As he approached the summit; he was walking along a narrow ridge with a 10,000 foot drop on either side.

He wrote: β€œMy chest was heaving for lack of oxygen. I arrived at the summit which is the size of a snooker table, five and half miles high in the sky. I was standing on the top of the world with the greatest view on the planet. I realised for one small moment that I was the highest person in the world. I could have roared with joy but instead I said a prayer for others, who had a similar dream to mine, but who died on the mountain in search of that dream.”

Having a balanced vision of life is essential. This morning I’m asking God to bless my days with enough happiness to keep me hopeful, enough sorrow to keep me humble, enough faith to banish depression and enough love to think of others.

β€œFor everything there is a season and a time for every matter under heaven.” ( Eccl 3)
