Some Ambulance services in England have been dealing with an unprecedented level of demand over the weekend, putting extreme strain on their services. The NHS may not yet be in full blown 'winter crisis' but there's no doubt it's dealing with extremely high levels of demand. On Friday it emerged that visits to A&E topped 436,000 in the previous week β nearly 30,000 more than the same week the prior year. Whatβs the cause? Steve Hynes is head of service for the Greater Manchester Area of the North West Ambulance Service NHS Trust.

The plunging price of oil is having a big effect on the Russian economy. On Monday the rouble fell 10% against the dollar, its worst day for more than fifteen years. ΜύThe central bank in Moscow has had to push interest rates up to 17%, the second rise in a week. Dr Samuel Greene is director of the Russia Institute at King's College London. Sir Edward Leigh is a Conservative MP who takes a particular interest in Russia.

The Cell Therapy Catapult is announcing on Tuesday it is funding the first gene therapy treatment on a patient with Leukaemia. ΜύThe project is significant as the treatment has the potential to eventually treat cancer by replacing chemotherapy. Keith Thompson is chief executive of The Cell Therapy Catapult.

Brighton and Hove Council is lobbying the government to exempt it from the Right to Buy scheme. ΜύIts main argument is, of the 6,000 council homes sold under Right to Buy, more than 1,000 are now being used for private tenants. The government has told us it has no plans to change what is a national policy. ΜύSince the Coalition increased the discount offer to tenants there has been a fivefold increase in the last year in the number of people purchasing their homes. Bill Randall is a Green Party Councillor and chairman of the Housing Committee on the Brighton and Hove City Council. Adam Memon is the head of economic research at the Centre for Policy Studies.
