From Methodist Minister Leslie Griffiths

From Methodist Minister Leslie Griffiths

Once and once only have I told the Christmas story to an audience that had never heard it before. It was in faraway Haiti where I was living at the time. One Christmas Day, I led a service in a remote country church. On my arrival, I found a congregation at least three times its normal size. A large number of migrant workers from the nearby sugar fields had turned up. I greeted them and soon gathered that they knew absolutely nothing about Mary or Joseph, they’d never heard of Bethlehem and didn’t have a clue who Cyrenius governor of Syria might have been. So I put the sermon I’d prepared in my back pocket and decided to tell the Christmas story just as it comes with no adornment or frills. I’ll never forget the response. They heard how the parents of Jesus had to travel miles to take part in a census. They nodded in recognition; how many times had bureaucrats told them what to do and where to go? And the innkeeper’s β€œNo room here” also struck home with people who themselves had nowhere to lay their head, who slept under the stars. When they heard how some shepherds, peasant folk just like themselves had seen and heard angels and were the first to worship the Lord of lords, they got very excited. But it was the arrival of the three kings from the east that was the clincher. Peasants were admitted before kings, the usual social order turned upside down. The people in front of me identified with what was happening, they claimed it as their own, they whooped for joy. I discovered the power of this oh-so-familiar story for people coming to it new. And ever since, all I want for Christmas is to tell it fresh. So that everyone can catch something of that power.
