Well Chris we’re about to enter the darkest and coldest of the seasons, which is why there are so many lights around at this time of year. Different religious groups respond to the darkness by encouraging their followers to believe that change is going to come: a religious message that’s proclaimed loud and clear.

In case you didn’t know, the Jewish version of the festival of lights is called Chanukkah and it starts tomorrow (but because the Jewish day starts at sunset, that’s actually later this evening). The story behind this festival is found in the pages of Jewish history. Two thousand years ago the Greeks, who ruled over Jerusalem, were busy trying to get everyone to follow their culture. They took over the Temple in Jerusalem, which was where the Jewish people worshipped the One God. Because the Jews weren’t willing to worship anywhere else, a man called Judah Maccabee launched a personal protest and said: ‘Stop trying to change me!’ He turned to the other Jews who were horrified by what the Greeks were doing and cried ‘C’mon c’mon!’

Now it takes a lot to unite the Jewish people as we always argue, but they responded to Judah’s cry, agreeing ‘we can’t say no.’ Judah formed an army of two or three hundred people, left the city and waged war on the Greeks there. Despite being greatly outnumbered, Judah and his followers managed to drive the Greek soldiers out of the city of Jerusalem.

Against all the odds, this tiny group of believers had managed to defeat a mighty army. They returned to the city, went into their Temple and found that the altar was nothing more than broken stones. They tidied up this precious building and rededicated it. Their achievement is celebrated every year with the festival of Chanukkah when Jews tell the world about their remarkable victory against mighty odds.

There’s an important message in that story for those of all faiths and none – even if we sometimes feel that it’s us against the world, if your spirit is strong and you hold on to your beliefs you can drive away even the deepest darkness and enable light to prevail and shine through.
