Pause for Thought

Pause for Thought

From Rev’d Richard Coles, cleric and broadcaster:

Three carol services this week, and we sang three times of the star of Bethlehem, westward leading, through the night skies of Palestine to the birth of Christ. I though of the night skies of Finedon, my parish, and me and my eight year old neighbour Hattie standing in the garden looking at the International Space Station, westward leading on its orbit of earth. β€œWave to the astronauts,” I said, and she waved and so did I.

Μύ

I’ve renewed that acquaintance this week, but in proximity rather than at distance. In fact the Space Station’s former Commander, Chris Hadfield, and I have spent so much time together lately people are beginning to talk.

We met on Monday, to discuss science and religion, among other things, so speaking sky-pilot to sky-pilot I asked, β€œWhat’s Christmas like in space?”

Complicated, was the answer. The Space Station orbits the earth at 17,000 miles per hour – rather a challenge for Rudolf and his reindeer pals to catch up with that – but there are presents, double helpings actually, because the Russians on board, following the Julian calendar, keep Christmas on a different day; thanks to the mission safety-protocols crackers are definitely out; but there is a Christmas Tree, looking a bit tatty now, he said, and disappointingly no bigger than a poinsettia.

Μύ

However, the best thing, he said, was going to the cupola, the 360 degree observation dome, and looking out at planet earth in the vast blackness of space, so fragile, so beautiful that the astronauts lower their voices and speak in hushed tones, marveling at a view that changes the way you see everything.

And I thought then of the wise men, led by a star to a crib, and looking into its radiance, and seeing a tiny baby, so fragile, so beautiful; and how that changed the way they saw everything.

O magnum mysterium, O great mystery, that comes out of nowhere and lights the stars and sends them spinning into space.
