Pause for Thought

Pause for Thought

From Leslie Griffiths, Methodist Minister:

Β Rough sleepers are on our streets again and, whatever you think about them, you can’t deny their existence. I tend not to give anything to those sad figures sitting on our pavements or lying in shop doorways, I guess I’m afraid they may be professional beggars, but I must admit that I hate myself for it. Even when I make a small donation to a homelessness charity it feels like conscience money. I find it difficult sometimes to square my hard-heartedness with my beliefs.

Β Things were slightly better when I had direct responsibility for a day centre for homeless people. I actually got to know a number of them and, indeed I remember sleeping rough with them once or twice. One man remains vividly in my memory. He slept in a cardboard box at the top of the steps leading into my church. As I climbed those stairs, with impeccable timing, his head would pop up (he had red hair and startlingly blue eyes): β€œMorning Les,” he’d say. Later, he’d be in church taking communion. β€œThe body of Christ,” I said solemnly as I handed him the bread. To my horror, when I returned to serve the next line of people, Kevin was still there. I hesitated a little but gave him the bread a second time. And he was still there when I came back again. He got a third helping but this time I bent down and whispered in his ear: β€œYou really ought to go back to your seat now.” He looked up at me, everything was at its quietest as he said in a loud, clear voice β€œAs you say Les but I can feel it doing me ruddy good.” Out of the mouths of babes and sucklings.

It’s memories of people like Kevin that keep me sane when I pass by on the other side. I just wish I were a better Samaritan.
