Pause for Thought

Pause for Thought

From Father Brian D’Arcy a Catholic Passionist priest:

Last Friday millions of generous people put into practice a true gospel principle, namely: β€œIt is a better thing to give than to receive.”  And so far 32 million pounds has been raised – an amazing figure!

Ghandi, from a different Faith perspective, had an equally memorable philosophy: β€œAn ounce of practice is worth a ton of preaching.”

Every year Children in Need, powerfully reminds us how lucky we are to have the essentials of life when we consider that millions of unfortunate children never get a chance to live at all because of crippling poverty.

Every six seconds a child dies from hunger- related causes. Close to five million children die from preventable diseases every year. One million infants a year die simply because they lack vitamin A.

Over the years, Children in Need have saved the lives of millions of children. More significantly, they provide healing and care for vulnerable children.

Children in Need continue to do such essential work because of your generosity. You have shown amazing ingenuity and a fantastic sense of fun, coming up with inspired schemes each year.Β  And a special mention to the Breakfast Show winners of the Dirty Dozen, 10 Go Mad In Monaco and all the other prize packages.Β Β  You all have raised millions, saved millions and inspired millions for years on end.

Comedian Bob Hope, who was famous for his charitable work, used to quip: β€œIf you haven’t got charity in your heart, you have the worst kind of heart trouble.”

Your heart is certainly in the right place and as a result children without a future have been rescued from drug abuse, homelessness, violence and even death. Even though we cannot serve God and money, you have shown we can serve God with money and talent.

But we can’t sit on our laurels now. Working for justice never ends. St Augustine said that charity is no substitute for justice denied because injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.
