Β Craig has devoted his career to understanding the drug – its benefits, pitfalls and other applications.Β  He's back at Leeds University to give a talk on the 25th Oct for the , entitled: β€œLeeds' role in breast cancer breakthrough - the Tamoxifen tale”.

Northern Soul

The late 1960’s in the north of England saw the birth of Northern Soul, an American inspired dance movement which gained a passionate youth following, and helped to define a generation. In Elaine Constantine’s film β€˜Northern Soul’, the intensity of this underground movement is portrayed by following the story of two young friends trying to make a name for themselves as Northern Soul DJ’s. This is Elaine’s directorial debut, and it charts a place and time that made an indelible mark on her teenage years in Lancashire. Jane Garvey will be talking to Elaine and to Northern Soul dance instructor Sharon Sullivan, about the film and why the movement still speaks to audiences today.

Common People

When set out to write a book about her family history and investigate the untold stories of ordinary folk, she found paupers, publicans, skilled workers and an itinerant people who travelled to work in servitude or industry.Β  This story of her people draws surprising parallels to lives today and Β to all our family histories.Β  Alison joins Jane Garvey on Woman’s Hour to talk about our fascination with the past and how it relates to the present.

The Queen of southern soul Candi Staton talks to Jenni about her 50 year career in the music industry. Since gospel singing in the 1950’s, she has become famous for pop hits such as 'You’ve Got the Love' and 'Young Hearts Run Free'. Her honest lyrics describe her often rocky home life and she explains how making music has been the therapy (and the love) she needed to see her through.Β  Her new album ' Life Happens' is available now.
