Pause for Thought
From Vicky Beeching Theologian, Writer and Broadcaster:
Today weβve heard a lot about the Children in Need charity auction. Itβs brilliant to hear so much moneyβs been raised.Β Charity auctions are a fun way to bid against each other for a really good cause.Β
We humans seem to be wired to enjoy competing with one another - and itβs not limited to us; last week news broke about another species with the same traits. Research from America revealed that Mexican free-tailed bats are way more competitive than scientists ever imagined.
These bats have developed a clever way to throw each other off their game when hunting. When they chase their prey, they track its whereabouts by sonar; making high-pitched sounds and judging by their echo how close the prey is. As the hunting bat is about to swoop down for a catch, its sonar noises speed up to an incredibly fast rate.Β
At this moment, they discovered, another bat can jam the sonar signal by making a blocking sound.Β The hunting bat loses track of their prey, and the jamming bat sneaks in and snaps it up. Itβs a whole new dog-eat-dog (or bat-eat-bat) side of the creatures that was previously unknown.
A bit of friendly competition in life can be healthy β and as weβll see this week β an entertaining way to raise money! But trying to sabotage othersβ efforts so that we win is the ugly side of rivalry. Itβs so easy for us to slip into this when we feel insecure or threatened.Β
Jesusβ disciples were plagued with the same struggles we face around this. In Matthewβs Gospel we hear how two of them jostled for the best position, asking Jesus if they, rather than anyone else, could sit in the most impressive seats in heaven. He answered: βAnyone among you who wants to be great must help others. Anyone who wants to be first should put themselves last, taking on the role of a servant.βΒ
If our priority is constantly trying to out-do those around us, rather than love and help them, I believe weβll never find real happiness. As Theodore Roosevelt put it: βComparison is the thief of joyβ. Once we stop looking over our shoulder to assess the competition, we can finally enjoy being ourselves and peacefully walk our own unique path.
