Liam Logan heads to Mossley Mill in Newtownabbey, where Scottish singer Emily Smith is back in Northern Ireland to perform a special concert.

It’s twelve years since Emily won the Young Traditional Musician of the Year Award from Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Radio Scotland, and since then the Dumfriesshire singer has become celebrated far and wide for bringing both a freshness and a depth of meaning to the way she puts across the songs and ballads of her homeland.

Emily is also acclaimed as a writer of her own songs, newly sprung, but rooted in the tradition. However, on her latest album, Echoes, Emily includes none of her own compositions, but offers a mixture of traditional Scots songs and ones by contemporary writers, all interpreted in her distinctive style.

Kist features a sample of songs from Emily’s concert, and Emily tells Liam about the influences on her singing; about combining being a mother with her busy career, and how making music is an important part of her Scottish identity.
